Therapeutically Informed Meditation
Therapeutically informed meditation combines a psychological perspective on introspection, and the ancient practice of meditation. The goal is to offer a means for finding healing and self-growth through skills training, education, practice, and reflection. Meditation offers a method for exploring and expanding on mental skills that effect our quality of life, such as attentional control, self-soothing, greater presence, compassion, and observation without judgment.
This process teaches the basic tools of meditation and allows for a targeted approach to focus on specific needs when requested. Individuals with ADHD, anxiety, depression, or seeking anger management could all benefit greatly from the practice meditation has to offer. Couples can also explore deeper levels of personal connection with their partner to build a more robust relationship.
While removing obstacles is an important part of beginning deeper work, meditation also provides a path for expanding on personal strength. Imagination can become invited to ignite curiosity and empower creative engagement. A greater sense of self provides unflappable strength in the face of challenges, while the ability to harness the power of attention expands a practitioner’s capacity for engaging with fulfilling experience.
Shon MonDragon is a master’s level practicum student with Richland Oaks, and a certified meditation teacher through Sacred Sit in association with Yoga Alliance. Shon has over 10 years of meditation experience and uses his knowledge of psychology and meditation to inspire healing, curiosity, and insight.
Therapeutically informed meditation classes cover the neurobiological foundations of meditation, the cognitive tools it engages, and the existential basis of various styles before moving into an informed process of practice and reflection.
