Training in Mental Health

Clinical/Counseling Training is at the heart of Richland Oaks, and one of our greatest joys. We find it an incredible privilege to participate in the formation of professional skills, of a professional identity, and of a professional vocation. The spirit that guides Richland Oaks’ clinical/counseling training is one of growth and development. While we whole-heartedly accept our role as gatekeepers into the mental health profession, our training values include correction as growth. As licensed and seasoned supervisors, we are humble enough to know that the practice of mental health is just that — a practice — and that mistakes and missteps are an essential and inescapable facet of how patients grow.

Richland Oaks currently trains practicum students in psychology and counseling, and also offers positions for post-doctorates in psychology, pre-doc internships in psychology, and LPC-Associates. All of our training is done onsite, with in-house supervision, and includes formal individual and group supervision, formal group case consultation, and endless amounts of informal consultation and support from all members of the ROCC family.

As a practicum student, you will participate in weekly individual supervision, group didactics and group supervision/consultation. They are also countless opportunities to informally consult and cultivate a professional community as we are a social and friendly group. Because we represent multiple mental health fields, you will have opportunities to learn and grow with students and staff in marriage and family, psychology, clinical social work and counseling. The patients you will work with will be as diverse as our staff and our surrounding community. Very often the services you will be providing will be at little-to-no-cost to the patient, and thus we see you as vital to our mission of making meaningful mental health more accessible.

Running through the veins of Richland Oaks is an eye toward independent private practice. Thus, successful practicum students will be able to work independently, attend to day-to-day administrative tasks, schedule and process payments directly with patients. Over the years, Richland Oaks has launched dozens of individual and group practices throughout the DFW metroplex.

Supervisory experiences for those seeking positions for post-doctorates in psychology, pre-doc internships in psychology, and LPC-Associates will be similar to those of practicum students in terms of the depth and breadth of supervision provided, but may differ in structure according to the parameters of the position. The ROCC team of supervisors practices out of our Richardson office.
